Course Details

Matsuura City Hall Fukushima Branch Office → Ooyama viewing platform(2.5km) → Fukujuji Temple(5.0km) → Old Yougen Elementary School(6.8km) → Nabegushi Fishing Port(7.4km) → Submarine Rock(8.5km) → Doya Terraced Paddy Fields(10.0km)

  • 1.Ooyama viewing platform
Daisen Park, which overlooks Iroha Island, is famous for its cherry blossoms, with approximately 500 Someiyoshino and Yamazakura cherry trees planted there. The name "Iroha Island" is derived from the 48 letters of the Iroha alphabet. It is said that Kobo Daishi, a great Buddhist priest, threw a brush at the island because of its beauty.

  • 2.Fukujuji Temple
The temple enshrines the principal image (Enmei Jizo Bosatsu), which is very beautiful with its benevolent and noble face and graceful appearance. The Iroha maple that blooms there has the smallest and prettiest leaves among the maple species. It is a rare giant tree of this species, with a beautiful and precious form.

  • 3.Old Yougen Elementary School
Matsuura Municipal Yogen Elementary School was closed at the end of March 2016 due to the merger with Matsuura Municipal Fukushima Elementary School. The wooden school building was used as a location for the movie "Nian-chan" and is still preserved in its original state.

  • 4.Nabegushi Fishing Port
Fukushima-cho is home to a thriving anchovy (iriko) fishing industry. The freshly caught anchovy is quickly boiled in seawater and dried at a processing plant in the port, making it delicious not only for making soup stock, but also for eating as is.

  • 5.Submarine Rock
Located in the western part of Fukushima facing Imari Bay, the sandstone has been eroded over the years to resemble its present shape. The local people are familiar with the name because the rock resembles a submarine.

  • 6.Doya Terraced Paddy Fields (from the observation point)
Doya Terraced Paddy Fields are famous for their beautiful sunset over the sea, one of the most beautiful among the 100 best terraced rice fields in Japan, and attract many photographers from April to May during the rice planting season, and many tourists during the "Fire Festival of Doya Terraced Paddy Fields" in autumn. Visitors can enjoy the various expressions of the rice paddies throughout the four seasons.
